She’s sharing her body with a dying alien soul. He’s a warrior with a temper—except when it comes to her. Together, they race to save what’s left.
Fractured Souls is the third book in the Darkstar Mercenaries Series. The books in the series can be read as stand-alone; there are just references to characters from the other books.
Overview
Alexis doesn’t know how she’s alive. After she died, an alien possessed her body and brought her back to life. Now she has this strange Kordolian acting like her shadow. She has reasons to distrust Kordolians, one of whom got her into this mess. But this Kordolian’s patience and gentleness are helping her ease into this new existence.
Nythean doesn’t know why the general has picked him to guard her, but he wants to do anything he can to help this human. He’s drawn to her. As the Tharian soul who possesses part of her body starts to die, they race to the Tharian’s home planet to fulfill their promises.

Positives
Nythean is known for his temper, but with Alexis, he is calm and patient. I love the contrast of this cold, brutal alien warrior being so warm and gentle with her. He also has a pretty good grasp of her trauma responses.
The world-building and characters are so well done. It’s a wonderful world to escape to. The new species adds to the beauty of Anna Craven’s world-building.
Negatives
There is a little bit of slowness in the middle before they arrive at the Tharian’s home planet. It’s still interesting, just a lull between the energetic beginning and endings.
Recommendations
Fractured Souls gets four stars from me. I just love the world. If you love a rich science fiction world, you won’t be disappointed.
Narration Notes
J.F. Harding continues as narrator for the Darkstar Mercenaries Series. He does a great job as a solo narrator, doing a different voice for each character.
The series is available for free with a Kindle Unlimited membership.
